Boat ramp construction
Boat ramp constructions plans and instructions are available from a number of sources. The avid boater who wants to enjoy the hot summer days fishing on the lake or river can make sure he has access to the water by having his own private boat ramp. A public ramp sometimes is not available without membership, or is sometimes closed to the public. When the public ramp is closed, the boater is prevented from launching his boat into the water. However, he can mitigate this possibility by building his own ramp. A variety of plans, complete with illustrations and construction details that outline the estimated total cost are available from sources. Check with your local Department of Natural Resources before beginning the construction project, as departments regulate the conditions and environment under which a ramp can be constructed. Summer recreation is one of the many reasons that people decide to build their own boat ramp. The family that water skis on long hot summer days will do so using their own boat. Whether it is a boat with an outboard or inboard motor, not only can they water ski, but also they can swim and fish from the same boat. Angling for lake bass, trout, or catfish in the river is a fun way to spend weekends, together. Even large ponds require a boat ramp if no dock is available. When large ponds are stocked with fish by the Department of Fish and Wildlife, boating becomes an excellent way to relax. Consider whether a small boat or a large boat is better for the type of water you plan to be using, and construct your ramp accordingly. Construction is not difficult if one has the right tools and prepares in advance. Basic tools such as a hammer, skillsaw, power drill and posthole digger are usually required. If one doesn't have them in the garage or basement, renting the tools is often possible at the same locations where materials such as Portland cement are purchased: a hardware store, a lumberyard, or building supply. Pressure treated lumber is sometimes required but can be had at minimal cost. This type of lumber will resist decay under aquatic outdoor environments, such as water and sun. The Army Corps of Engineers provides information to the state on public boat ramps. The state extension office is also a good resource for obtaining plans. Diverting the water during construction is paramount if the water has a fast current. Heavy equipment for excavation is not required, if specialized equipment designed for dewatering the work site is used. Boat Drawings |
