The plans will depend on whether the boat ramp is to be located in fresh water or salt water. They are not mutually compatible, and regulations affecting the construction will be different. The first step is to select a good site. The site where a fresh water ramp is to be located should include a slope of between 12% and 15%. Otherwise, there will likely be problems with a motor vehicle moving the boat into and out of the water. Likewise, water depth is a critical factor that will depend on the size of the boat.

When building on a river, consider also shoreline vegetation because access to the shoreline by road is an issue. Alternately, consider just going to a resort, campground or public park where access to a ramp is sometimes available year round.
